When we set out to create an aero wheel designed purely for speed, we wanted to do so more than just simply. It wasn't that being fast wasn't a priority, but we were tired of wheels that only performed well in a straight line. Ultimately, we developed the CLX 64 Disc, the fastest wheel we’ve ever tested with all of the disc brake performance benefits we’ve grown to love. This iteration features a more impact-resistant rim, a disc-specific carbon layup that optimizes stiffness and weight, and incredible brake modulation and power in all conditions.

One of the first questions we get about the CLX 64 is, “Why 64mm instead of 65mm?” To put it simply, it’s because 64mm simply tested faster than 65mm. One millimeter—that’s how deep our testing goes. Having an in-house Win Tunnel allows us to address any possible variation. After two years of development, 80 rim design variations, and nearly 300 hours of studying tire-to-frame interactions in the Win Tunnel, we found that the 64mm iteration was the fastest for real-world riding conditions. In fact, it's even faster than the 80-plus-millimeter-deep wheels it was tested against. Being able to run a shape almost 20mm shallower than the competition, while still having such low drag, yields a wheel that has significantly less side force and steering torque. This translates into less buffeting and more confidence, even in the fastest crosswinds.

The ensuing weight reduction, using less material, is another benefit of a shallower rim. Many deep carbon wheels feel "sluggish" due to their high inertia. What is this? Inertia is the amount of force it takes to accelerate or decelerate, and wheels built around heavier rims lack the vivaciousness that many riders desire. Being over half-a-pound lighter than other wheels in its aero category, the CLX 64 accelerates, decelerates, and changes directions with less effort.

The rim isn't the only component of the CLX 64 that contributes to its aerodynamic prowess; however, as in order to create the fastest wheels, we focused on wheels as a system, and not just a rim with "other parts," and our Aero Flange (AF) hubs play a significant role. Fully designed in the Win Tunnel, our AF hubs feature an extremely small frontal aero footprint without sacrificing stiffness, which makes them aerodynamically efficient.

Taking the advantage even further, these wheels were developed to work in harmony with modern-width 24C tires. The 21mm internal rim width spreads the tire, in this case to 26C, to perfectly mate with the rim. Not only does this create a low drag system, but it also yields exceptionally low rolling resistance and inspiring cornering grip. And to make sure we checked all the corresponding boxes, we also made the rim tubeless-ready.

To round out the multitude of performance features of the rim, we chose the highest quality manufacturing components to mate the CLX 64 with. Starting with DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spokes, which test faster than their round counterparts in the Win Tunnel, we hand-lace the 64 rim to our AF hubs that house CeramicSpeed's legendary bearings and DT 240 hub internals. Why hand-built? Machines make mistakes, and mistakes are not problems, so we have real people lace every wheel by hand.
