Want to learn more about triathlon? Meet our specialist Guillaume Allard, who presents the 10 essential accessories for happy swimming, cycling, and running.
1. Triathlon Handlebar
Adding a triathlon handlebar to a road bike essentially transforms it into a triathlon bike at a lower cost. These extensions, installed on the handlebars, allow triathletes to adopt an aerodynamic position. "We opt for curved bars at the front if we have more difficulty bending forward," says Guillaume Allard, kinesiologist and coach at Zeus Triathlon. See triathlon handlebars .
2. Aerodynamic Helmet
Wearing a streamlined helmet during the cycling leg of a triathlon reduces wind resistance, saving precious seconds. "Be aware: this type of helmet is less ventilated than a traditional road helmet. This is why it requires an adaptation period during training, among other things," notes the kinesiologist.
3. Triathlon Suit
Guillaume Allard strongly recommends opting for a one-piece triathlon suit (also called a trisuit ). It is more aerodynamic and also stays in place better during the run. Trying on this garment is essential to ensure that the shoulders move freely. For this reason, it is preferable to buy a short-sleeved rather than a long-sleeved suit.
4. Bike Bags
A saddle bag , which contains all the necessary equipment to deal with a flat tire, is essential in all circumstances. Ideally, it should be spacious enough but also streamlined so as not to cause unnecessary air friction. The purchase of an additional bag to attach to the front triangle of the bike is also worth considering to store bars, energy gels, etc.
5. Bottle Cages
They are necessary for carrying your water bottles and staying hydrated throughout the cycling event. Some streamlined models can be installed inside the front triangle. There are also models that attach under the saddle, and others that are placed between your extensions. Essential, whether you're participating in an Ironman® or a sprint triathlon.
6. Power Meter
Many brands have entered the power meter market in recent years. As a result, it is now possible to know exactly how much power you are producing, down to the watt and in real time. "This data allows you to perfect your training sessions," says Guillaume Allard. Different models, in the form of pedals, crank arms, and rear wheel hubs, are available.
7. GPS Watch
To keep an eye on the progress of your effort, on land as well as at sea. A true on-board computer, the GPS watch displays essential data such as speed and distance. Some more sophisticated models also provide access to more advanced data, such as arm cadence in swimming, power developed in cycling, or heart rates maintained during running. See all GPS devices .
8. Nutrition Belt
During the running leg, it can be risky to rely solely on aid stations for hydration and nutrition. A specific, adjustable belt worn around the waist mitigates this problem. In addition to holding two, three, or four mini-bottles, it usually contains a compartment for small items, such as your keys or loose change.
9. Hand Paddles
This swimming accessory, inspired by the webbed feet of ducks, allows triathletes to work on grip, pull, and push in freestyle during their training sessions. These paddles should be used in combination with a small float inserted between the legs ( pull-boy ) to maximize buoyancy. See swimming accessories .
10. Triathlon Running Shoes
Unlike traditional running shoes, triathlon-specific shoes are designed for quick donning, thus facilitating the transition between cycling and running. Attachments located on the tongue and heel reinforcement provide additional support for slipping the foot into the shoe. Some models even swap laces for elastic bands. No more tying shoes!
