Born from its founder's cramps
Before launching Precision Fuel & Hydration in 2011, Andy Blow was a sports scientist, notably with the Benetton and Renault Formula 1 teams, and a top-level triathlete. He suffered from cramps and hyponatremia in long IRONMAN races, despite following the hydration advice of the day. After years of trial and error, he learned to manage his own sodium and fluid intake. The brand grew out of that experience, built on a simple idea: sweat is not the same from one person to the next, and neither is hydration.
What the range covers
The selection carried at Bicycles Quilicot covers hydration, energy during the effort and carrying your drink.
- Effervescent electrolyte tablets: three sodium strengths, from 500 to 1,500 mg per litre, depending on whether your sweat is lightly or very salty.
- Electrolyte capsules: a way to add sodium and magnesium on the move, with plain water rather than a flavoured sports drink.
- Carb mixes: a powder to dilute, with or without electrolytes, depending on whether you want to manage your sodium separately.
- Gels and chews: 30 g of carbohydrate per serving, with a caffeinated version of the gel.
- Bottles: 500 ml and 1 L models, with a wide opening for filling and mixing.
Which product for which ride
A simple rule of thumb: white salt marks on your jersey after a ride are often a sign of very salty sweat, which calls for a higher strength. If you sweat lightly, the lightest one is enough. For rides of several hours, add carbohydrate to your drink or carry gels and chews. And as with any nutrition product: try it in training before you use it on race day.
