Galfer: brake pads that came from cars and motorcycles

A Barcelona house of braking

In November 1952, Maffio Milesi opened a workshop in Barcelona to make the flexible brake linings he had invented in Italy. His main customer was the FIAT group, which was building the SEAT factory in Spain. The house went on to supply pads, calipers and clutch discs to motorcycle makers such as Mototrans (Ducati), then opened its American subsidiary in 1992. In 1998 it worked with Magura on the Gustav M, its first mountain bike disc brakes, before launching the Galfer Bike brand for bicycle discs and pads in 2012.

What the range covers

The selection carried at Bicycles Quilicot covers three uses, for Shimano (B-Type) and SRAM (Elixir, Level and Road) disc brakes.

  • Standard: an organic semi-metallic compound for smooth, quiet, heat-resistant braking, for road, mountain and gravel riding.
  • Road: a road-specific compound for powerful braking and a long life, even in wet weather.
  • E-Bike: pads designed for the higher loads and braking demands of e-bikes, with extended longevity.

Choosing the right pads

Pads are chosen first according to your brake's caliper: identify the make and model of your brakes, Shimano or SRAM, then compare with the shape of the worn pad. Next, the compound: for an e-bike or long descents, go for a pad designed for high loads and heat. After a replacement, make a few progressive stops to bed the pads in before braking hard.
