Enduro Bearings
Enduro Bearings is the bearing that was born in the attic of a forklift business. Founded in 1996 in California, the brand adapted an industrial principle to cycling: the cageless MAX bearing. At Bicycles Quilicot: sealed ABEC-3 and ABEC-5 bearings, MAX bearings, ceramic hybrid and angular contact bearings. (Read more)
Enduro Bearings: bicycle bearings born from a forklift
The idea came from a forklift
Enduro Bearings was born in California from the friendship between Matt Harvey, who had worked at Gary Fisher, White Industries and Bianchi, and Mike Alders, whose family ran a forklift business. Mike custom-machined mast guide bearings that were no longer made for older forklifts. Matt redrew them and realised the same principle, a ball bearing with no cage, could be scaled down for bikes. The first Enduro MAX bearings came out of that business's attic, with a push-button phone, two Apple II computers and a pile of bearing balls and steel bar stock. Founded in 1996, the brand is now headquartered in Oakland, California.
What the range covers
The selection carried at Bicycles Quilicot covers the bike's main points of rotation: hubs, cranks, headsets and suspension pivots.
- Sealed ABEC-3 bearings: the entry point of the Enduro range, a step up from the ABEC 1 bearings bike makers commonly fit, for hubs, headsets, pedals and cranks.
- MAX bearings: cageless, so with more balls, for mountain bike suspension pivots under heavy loads at low speed. Enduro claims about 35 to 40 % more load capacity than a standard radial bearing.
- ABEC-5 and ceramic hybrid bearings: for riders who want more precision, efficiency and durability.
- Angular contact bearings: for places where the load also arrives from the side, such as some bottom brackets.
How to find the right bearing
A bearing is identified by its code (6901, for example) and its three dimensions: inner diameter, outer diameter and width. A 6901 measures 12 × 24 × 6 mm. Read the code stamped on your old bearing, or measure it with a calliper, and choose the same format. The ABEC rating indicates manufacturing precision, and the MAX label a cageless construction.
