It's no secret: bike theft is a real scourge in Quebec. Unfortunately, the growing popularity of electric-assist bicycles comes with an increasing value on the market for ill-intentioned individuals. How can you prevent your electric bike from falling into the wrong hands? Three guidelines to follow, according to the manager of Vélo Branché by Quilicot .
Keep your electric bike safe
A bike stored in a safe isn't very practical. After all, you get one to go somewhere . However, one thing to keep in mind is that the longer a bicycle remains locked in one place, the higher the probability of theft. "You absolutely must avoid chaining it outside all night or in the same spot for more than eight hours," says Michel Courval. "Consequently, it's best to bring it inside the house or find a secure space for it at your workplace."
Remove valuable removable parts
Knowing that the battery is the most valuable component on an electric bike , it is, of course, recommended to remove it when locking your bike outside. Fortunately, most electric-assist bike batteries are removable. Some models even allow the screen to be removed, which renders the bike completely unusable. "Without these components, a bike loses a lot of appeal to a thief. There's no more convincing deterrent," notes Michel Courval.
A good lock
"Anything that can't be removed should be secured with a lock , including both wheels and the bike frame," says Michel Courval. He also advises purchasing anti-theft systems that replace nut or quick-release systems, which are very convenient... but equally convenient for thieves who can steal a seat or a wheel in seconds. "A thief feels vulnerable during an intervention," says Michel Courval. "They will always prefer a bike that can disappear in a few minutes over one that requires more work." As for the choice of the lock itself, it's clear that you shouldn't skimp on quality for an electric bike. U-locks have proven their worth.
Despite all these precautions, our two-wheeled ally is not exempt from all risk of theft. It is therefore wise to always notify your insurance company of the purchase of an electric bike (or any valuable bicycle) to verify that the coverage will allow you to replace the stolen item in case of theft.
