To better share the road with motorists (and other cyclists), here are some rules regarding bike etiquette .

What not to do

Shoaling

A technique that consists of passing a group of cyclists at a stop ( shoal = group) to be the first to start again as soon as the light turns green. A rude and frustrating lack of consideration for others. Get in line!

Salmoning

Named after salmon swimming upstream, salmoning involves riding against traffic on a one-way bike path, or worse, in the street...

Taking up the entire width

Chatting with a friend while cycling beside them might be acceptable on a day when there's no one else on the road, but certainly not during peak hours!

Riding while listening to music

You might not know it, but listening to music while cycling is illegal ! Music prevents you from hearing the sounds of your surroundings, whether it's cars or other cyclists.

What to do

Give a warning when you pass!

Whether by using your bell or speaking aloud, don't hesitate to warn the person in front of you when you're passing them (always on the left).

Use your hands!

There's nothing more unpleasant than seeing someone suddenly change direction in front of you. Be courteous to those behind you: use your hands to indicate your intention to turn left or right.

Remain courteous at all times
