How to maintain and store your electric bike in winter
With winter approaching, and with it the arrival of cold weather, certain additional operations need to be carried out on electric bicycles, due to the presence of an electrical system on this type of bike. In this article, Bicycles Quilicot reviews the various tips issued by manufacturers to keep your bike running smoothly year after year.
Is maintenance mandatory in winter?
After a season of cycling, it's always a good idea to have a maintenance, whether your bike is fitted with an electric-assist system or not. Lighting, brake pads and gears need to be in perfect working order to be ready for winter or the next summer season. A component check will ensure that humidity does not affect your electric bike. If you're thinking of riding your bike in winter,
neoprene covers
are available from Bicycles Quilicot to keep the battery warm during your sub-zero rides.
How to store the battery?
The battery is your bike's most fragile component. Low temperatures can have a negative impact on the system's capacity, which in turn affects the overall battery life. In winter, at sub-zero temperatures, it is essential to remove the battery and store it at room temperature. The battery should be stored indoors at temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees. The same applies to recharging the battery: lithium-ion cells should be charged once at room temperature.
How to store your e-bike?
A garage or basement is ideal for storing your bike. You can store your electric bike under a carport or in an unheated shed, provided you remove the battery and store it at room temperature. Once again, opt for the best possible storage for the battery, bearing in mind that electric bike batteries left unused throughout the winter need to maintain a charge level of between 30% and 60%. If space is limited at home, Bicycles Quilicot offers winter storage for electric bikes . We'll take care of all the battery procedures and tune-up your bike. So you can ride your bike with peace of mind come spring!
How to wash your electric bike?
A bike will always run better if it's clean. Why not take advantage of the cold season to give yours a thorough cleaning? Please note that electric bikes require special handling:
- Before cleaning, remove the battery and screens or, if necessary, cover them with a cloth or aluminum foil.
- Use a bike-specific cleaner, a brush and a damp sponge, but never steam or high-pressure cleaners.
- When greasing the chain, make sure that the hydraulic brakes do not receive any lubricant.
- Clean your EAB regularly to prevent dirt from becoming embedded.
If you're uncomfortable with certain operations, we recommend that you go to a store to avoid any risk of breakage. We also recommend that you always use products designed for bicycles.
