Gravel Tires: Why Wider and Less Inflated Makes You Faster

If you're still riding 35 mm at 50 psi because a narrow, hard tire "rolls better," twenty years of measurements say otherwise. The right gravel tire is almost always wider, more supple and less inflated than the one you're on right now. This isn't comfort versus performance: on uneven surfaces, the same setup gives you both. Here's how to choose the width, the casing and the pressure that suit you, and what it actually changes on a ride.

  • On gravel, a wider tire rolls faster, because it lets you drop the pressure and cut the vibrations that cost you energy.

Why a wide tire rolls faster than a narrow one

The instinct comes from the road: less rubber on the ground, less rolling resistance. That holds on smooth pavement. On gravel, a second loss takes over, and it's far bigger: suspension losses. Every small stone the tire can't absorb sends a vibration into the bike, then into your body, which damps it. That energy is energy you produced and lost.

A wider tire holds more air, so it deforms to swallow the bumps instead of passing them on to you. Vojo magazine puts a number on the gain: roughly 0.1 to 0.15 bar less pressure for every extra 5 mm of section, with no added risk of pinch flats. The cost is modest — about 100 grams going from 45 to 50 mm, and an aerodynamic penalty that only becomes measurable past 30 km/h.

Which gravel tire width to choose

The real constraint isn't price or weight: it's what your frame will take. Before you order, measure the free space between the tire and the chainstays, and between the tire and the fork. You want at least 4 to 6 mm on each side for mud and stones. Check your rims too: below 25 mm internal width, a very wide tire takes on a light-bulb shape and loses its advantage in corners.

Recent frames sometimes clear 55 or 60 mm, but the vast majority of gravel bikes on the road today top out around 45 mm. So the question isn't "what's the ideal width in absolute terms," it's "what's the widest my bike will take for the terrain I ride."

Casing suppleness, the gain nobody looks at

This is the most underrated factor, and yet the one that creates the widest gap. A supple casing takes less energy to flex on every wheel revolution, transmits fewer vibrations and conforms better to the ground. Testing by Rene Herse Cycles measured 17.6 W between the fastest and slowest gravel tire in their panel — the equivalent of more than fifteen minutes over a 300 km event.

The trade-off is real: the more supple a casing, the more vulnerable it is to cuts. Puncture-protection layers stiffen the tire and cost it speed. A rider who mostly covers fine, clean gravel is better off favouring suppleness; someone crossing sharp rock regularly will gain more by not fixing flats on the roadside.

Knobs matter less than you think

On dry gravel, tread pattern makes almost no difference to grip. The stones roll over one another, and a knob has nothing to push against. What holds you in a corner is the contact patch and the suppleness of the tire — so, once again, width and pressure.

Knobs come into their own when there's material to bite into: mud, wet dirt, snow, sand. Hence the popularity of semi-slick profiles, with a nearly smooth centre for speed and side knobs for cornering. That's the logic behind the Continental Terra Trail, one of our most requested tires in 700x40.

Pressure, the free adjustment that changes everything

No purchase will give you as much as ten minutes spent dialling in your pressure. On rough surfaces, the gap between too much pressure and the right pressure is measured in tens of watts. Too hard and the tire bounces and rattles you; too soft and it folds in corners and you risk pinching the rim. The good news is that we no longer have to guess.

Several online calculators are remarkably accurate these days. They go well beyond rider weight alone: they account for front-rear weight distribution, internal rim width, casing type, luggage carried and the surface you ride. Three references worth your time:

  • Rene Herse — developed with Cal Poly Pomona's engineering department and backed by twenty years of real-road measurements. The most thorough on supple casings.
  • Silca — the model used by professional teams, with an expert mode factoring in surface roughness and target average speed.
  • Wolf Tooth — the simplest and quickest to use, and very well calibrated for gravel and mountain biking.

Treat the number you get as a starting point, not gospel. Out on the trail, drop in 2 psi steps until you feel the tire bottom out on impacts, then add 2 psi back. You've just found your pressure — and it won't be the same on dry gravel as in April mud.

Gravel season doesn't end with the first frost, but summer rubber hardens below 5 °C and loses its grip. On frozen paths and packed snow, a gravel-width studded tire changes the equation entirely — the 45NRTH Gravdal comes in 700x38 and 700x45 and fits most frames that already clear 40 mm. It's the same logic as the rest of this article: the surface dictates the tire, not the season.

Frequently asked questions

What gravel tire width should I get for a first bike?

700x40 is the best starting point. It clears nearly every gravel frame, stays fast on pavement to reach your trails, and handles crushed gravel without rattling you. You can adjust toward 35 or 45 later, once you know what you actually ride.

Tubeless or inner tubes?

Tubeless, if your wheels allow it. That's what lets you run lower pressure without risking a pinch flat — and everything explained here depends on that possibility. With inner tubes you'll need to stay 5 to 8 psi higher and you'll give up part of the gain.

How do I know if my frame will take wider tires?

Slide a coin between the tire and the chainstay, then between the tire and the fork. If at least 4 to 6 mm remain on each side, you have room. If you're unsure, drop by one of our stores with your bike: the check takes two minutes.

How long does a gravel tire last?

Between 2,500 and 5,000 km depending on the compound, the surface and your weight. A supple casing and a soft compound wear faster but roll better. Replace the tire as soon as the side knobs are rounded off or the casing starts showing through.

Choose based on what you actually ride

The best gravel tire isn't the most expensive or the lightest: it's the widest your frame will take, in the most supple casing your terrain tolerates, at the lowest pressure you can hold without bottoming out. If you're currently on 35 mm at 50 psi, moving to 40 mm at around 35 psi will give you more speed and more comfort at the same time — for the price of a pair of tires.
