Discover the new Garmin Edge 540 and 840 GPS
Garmin, the leader in GPS navigation devices, recently launched two new GPS models, the Edge 540 and Edge 840, which succeed the Edge 530 and Edge 830, which have set the standard in the world of bicycle navigation for many years.
The best on GPS bike market
The two new models offer many advanced features for cyclists, especially on the Solar models, which carry over the solar charging technology that Garmin implemented on the Edge 1040. Here's our roundup of their features:
The Garmin Edge 540
The Garmin Edge 540 is the more affordable of the two new Garmin GPS models, offering basic - and already excellent - functionality for cyclists looking to track their training. It has a 2.6-inch color display, large enough to read data easily while riding, and navigation buttons (the Edge 540 doesn't offer touchscreen navigation).
Like all Garmin models, the zoom and font size can be adjusted to your liking and the brightness automatically adjusts to the conditions for optimal readability and battery management. With 16GB of storage available, the Edge 540 offers more than enough memory for any cyclist who varies between multiple training rides and wants to have a few travel routes loaded on their device.
The Garmin Edge 840
The Garmin Edge 840 is distinguished mainly by one main feature: its 2.6-inch color screen 100% touch . Where the navigation is done with the traditional control buttons located on the sides of the device on the 540, the 840 offers a more comfortable and optimized navigation. While riding, it becomes very easy to switch screens between route and training data for example, or to zoom in on your route.
When it comes to storage, the 840 is also bigger: it offers no less than 32GB of storage , which makes it the ideal device for the most adventurous cyclists who always want to have a maximum number of routes loaded on their GPS. This also makes it even more interesting for bikepacking or ultra-distance use, as very long routes over several days can be stored on the Edge 840.
Common features and the new Solar technology
Both models feature ClimbPro , which tracks climbs and descents during cycling trips, ideal for cyclists who train in the mountains or on rough terrain. Garmin also introduces multi-band GNSS technology on these new models, which allows for a level of accuracy in your GPS location never before seen in a cycling device. The GPS devices are also of course compatible with Garmin Connect , the brand's online platform that allows you to track your progress, set goals and share your training data with other users.
But the big news with these GPS units is, of course, Solar technology: introduced on the Edge 1040 last year, solar-powered charging technology extends battery life by 23 percent in normal use (32 hours of battery life) and more than 87 percent in battery-saving mode (60 hours of battery life). With a battery life gain of up to 25 minutes per hour, that means you'll almost never have to worry about your device shutting down on the most adventurous hikes! If you still want to go without, you should know that the basic (non-solarpowered) models also offer very good battery life, well over 24 hours in normal use on both the 540 and the 840.
There you go, you have all the keys in hand if you want to change your GPS this year!
Both models will soon be available at Bicycles Quilicot
. As you can see, these are two excellent models that are sure to become, like their predecessors, real references on the market. The Edge 540 offers all the necessary features for every type of cyclist, and the Edge 840 will meet the needs of the most adventurous cyclists, but will also bring a touch of comfort with its touch screen.
