Are you participating in a bike rally this summer? Are you planning a bike outing on Quebec roads with a group of friends? Here are some safety rules to remember...

Group of cyclists

CYCLING SAFETY TIPS FOR CYCLING GROUPS

When deciding to cycle in a group, it's important to know that the only method allowed on Quebec roads by the Highway Safety Code is to cycle in a single file. This is an effective method that also helps save energy. Even if this method seems simple, it's good to review its basic principles.

1. Plan the route carefully

Before setting off as a group, agree in advance on the route and internal rules to follow, such as what to do if traffic separates the group or if a cyclist needs to stop.

2. The rotation

If the leader chooses to be relieved, they must first signal their intention to the others with a hand gesture, ensure the way is clear without decreasing speed, move to the left and let the group pass on their right, then rejoin the back of the line.

3. Good communication

This is key in many sports, and when it comes to group cycling, it can literally save lives. Whatever happens on the road, whether it's an obstacle, a stop, or a warning, you must quickly notify the person behind you or shout if you are at the back. In the event of a rotation, it is the duty of the cyclists at the back to warn the leader if a car approaches during the maneuver, as the leader is exposed to vehicles.

4. Dangerous road conditions

A wet road is obviously more slippery, so slow down on curves. Note that the paint used for lane markings on the road increases the risk of skidding. Additionally, when the road is riddled with holes or sandy and deemed dangerous by the leader, they must disband the group for safety until further notice.

TIPS FOR DRIVERS

Overtaking a group of cyclists

For drivers, they don't always know how to act when encountering a group of cyclists on a road. First, you need to slow down and wait for an opportune moment to overtake. The Highway Safety Code allows crossing a solid line to perform such an overtake when done safely.

When passing, it is important to maintain a distance of 1.5 m . The reason is simple: if cyclists need to avoid an obstacle on the road, there will be less risk of collision. This distance also allows for reaction in case of a fall. Before returning to your lane, make sure you can see the cyclists in your rearview mirror.

Don't hesitate to remind your loved ones of these basic rules, whether they are cyclists or drivers. Awareness and knowledge of the rules contribute to better coexistence between cyclists and drivers.
