5 road bike routes in Montreal

The island of Montreal and its surroundings offer many possibilities for getting away from it all with your road bike, whether you're staying in the heart of the island or exploring on the other side of the river! Whether you're a seasoned cyclist who's just arrived in the city, or you've just taken up road biking and are looking for ideas for your outings, here's a selection of 5 popular routes in Montreal that we heartily recommend:

Camilien-Houde: in the wheel of the professionnals

The Camilien-Houde route is the biggest climb on the island of Montreal, at 1.8km with an average gradient of 8%. The route of the annual Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, itself largely based on that of the 1974 World Championships and 1976 Olympic Games, makes it a natural choice for cyclists seeking a sporting challenge in the heart of the island. To warm up, recuperate from the climbs and enjoy the surrounding neighborhoods, there's nothing like continuing through Westmount, Côte-des-Neiges, the Plateau and Hochelaga on this beautiful route!

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and the river route

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is another not-to-be-missed venue for Montreal cyclists. With lanes reserved exclusively for cycling, it attracts drivers who want to express their speed on the long curves and straights of this track designed for F1. To extend the experience away from the hustle and bustle of the island, the river lane is perfect for long, quiet, intersection-free rides and superb views of Montreal and its surroundings.
